Get to Know West Bay

Situated at the northern tip of world-famous Seven Mile Beach, West Bay is Cayman’s second largest community and has its own unique character. Locals often choose to build or purchase homes in West Bay due to the prevailing cool breezes, and the fact that many areas of West Bay are considered ‘high and dry’ so not subject to flooding. You will sometimes feel as if you have stepped back in time, as you wander down quiet country lanes with names such as “Sticky Toffee Lane;” nonetheless, all twenty-first century conveniences are readily available.

This friendly neighbourhood boasts several high-quality restaurants, ranging from casual to fine dining and often specializing in seafood, as well as the island’s famed Turtle Centre, which also houses an aviary with colourful parrots and scarlet ibis. There are churches, supermarkets and pharmacies right in the community and West Bay is also home to Kimpton Seafire Resort + Spa, a boutique hotel with its own restaurants and spa, and several other resort communities. Access to the Seven Mile Beach corridor, Camana Bay, George Town, and the rest of the island is made easy by a well-maintained highway system. A vast change from little more than 60 years ago, when there was no road linking West Bay to the rest of Grand Cayman and travelling to George Town meant taking a boat!

In West Bay, you are never far from the ocean, and several favourite dive spots, including the wreck of the Kittiwake. The Cayman Islands Yacht Club is also located in West Bay making it a great choice for boat owners and sailors. Rum Point can be easily accessed by boat across North Sound – a far faster journey than it would be by road. The small neighbourhood of Barkers, comprises a National Park that offers kiteboarding, while Cemetery Beach affords snorkellers some of the best snorkelling on the island. If you tire of beaches and water sports, you can also go to Hell, a limestone outcrop (locally known as ‘ironshore’) that truly resembles one’s idea of Hell – there is even a little post office where you can buy cards and have them stamped “Hell.”

In this family-friendly community, you will find a mix of single-family homes and condos to choose from, either on the waterfront or inland. Prices are slightly cheaper than Seven Mile Beach or George Town, yet many entertainment destinations and employment hubs are within an easy commute.
