Peaceful South Sound has long been the choice for many long-term Cayman residents and it continues to be highly sought after as a desirable place to live. On the island’s southern shore, where the sea laps gently along narrow sandy beaches, many spacious, well-established single-family homes with extensive gardens share the area with upmarket condominium developments. Far quieter than Seven Mile Beach yet only five minutes from George Town by car, this area has a special charm all of its own.
Many of the island’s private schools and preschools are located in this area, which is also home to the rugby club and tennis club. South Sound Road itself continues to be just two lanes – with a 30-mph limit, making your commute into town relaxed and peaceful. The new boardwalk offers a pleasant place to stroll, jog, or walk your dog. While this is not Seven Mile Beach, there are frequent beach access points and there are many places for a quiet beach walk – without the crowds.
Apart from residences located on South Sound Road itself, or on the waterfront, the community of South Sound includes a range of affordable choices a little farther away from the water. There are established neighbourhoods around Walkers Road, with both apartment complexes, townhomes and single-family homes. Prices here can vary widely, depending on the size, age, location, and amenities of any condominium development; there should be something for every budget. Families particularly value the proximity to schools and also to George Town, whether for employment, shopping, or dining. Two of the island’s hospitals are located in South Sound, along with churches of various denominations, excellent supermarkets, pharmacies, and fast food outlets.
